Lilli Hutto -

a professional teacher, mediator, and mother of two, Lilli has studied kung-fu for 14 years and holds the first degree black belt level. She teaches shao lin and tai chi styles of kung-fu privately in the Spartanburg, SC area.

Ed Owens -

Lilli's husband, Ed, a chiropractor, is the research director at Sherman College of Chiropractic. Dr. Owens has studied Kung-fu since 1985 particularly focusing on the internal arts, tai chi chuan and pa kua chang.

As the name of the school implies, Lilli and Ed seek to bring about health and harmony in their daily lives through the diligent study of martial arts.

Health is best maintained through daily exercise and careful attention to mental and physical stressors. The practice of chinese martial arts provides an excellent balance of mind and body exercise, which enlivens the body and the spirit.

Typical classes run for about an hour and consist of warm-up and stretching exercises followed by study of kung-fu forms. We work the forms at several levels, looking at the posture and stance, timing of the action for effective delivery of power, and application of the techniques.

We offer classes in the following styles:

  • Tai Chi - A chinese martial art characterized by slow meditative movements. Emphasis is on correct posture, balance control and breathing. Teachers may accentuate chi development or martial arts applications as a sequence of moves is taught.
  • Shao Lin - A fast-paced chinese external martial arts style. Makes use of kicks, blocks, strikes and punches. Students learn a sequence of moves (a form) as well as martial arts applications.
  • Pa Kua (bagua) - A form and application-based chinese martial art. Movements are done more quickly and with expression of power as you walk around a circle with frequent direction changes and twisting. Emphasis is on body posture, foot placement and stances.
